Yan Yan Mak

Starting in the Hong Kong film industry in 1993 working as continuity, assistant director, production manager, and basically girl-of-all-trades, Yan Yan Mak has done a little bit of pretty much everything. She started directing short dramas for Hong Kong radio and television station RTHK before her extremely low budgeted first feature, Gege (2001), won the FIPRESCI prize at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. It went on to win prizes at the Venice Film Festival, Jeonju Film Festival,
and Fribourg. Her next movie, Butterfly (2004), a lesbian drama, was the opening film of Critic’s Week at the Venice Film Festival. It was nominated at the Golden Horse Awards for “Best Screenplay” and “Best Supporting Actor” for Eric Kot. She has gone on to direct commercials, music videos, and short films as well as documentaries and concert films.
