Lou Reed would be proud. Fresh from his English-language debut featuring governator Arnie and released earlier this year, Korean director Kim Jee-woon’s cinematic return to the motherland is an utterly surprising piece—commissioned for the 40th anniversary of the outdoor clothing manufacturer Kolon). Against all expectations, the cineaste has turned away from the strain of ultra-violent genre films (A Bittersweet Life, A Tale of Two Sisters, I Saw the Devil) that has earned him fame and world-wide acclaim to make a discreet but delightful romantic comedy that stands on its own as one of his best works.
Enshrined in the luxury of a superb production and the arms of a gorgeous female cast, Kim’s ONE PERFECT DAY follows a young man through a purgatorial series of god-awful blind dates, which hits rock bottom with a disastrous game of rock(precisely)-paper-scissors. One day, this vicious cycle of dead-end rendez-vous looks like it might be broken when he finds… an adorable little doggy. This time, maybe just maybe, he might be soon climbing the stairway to his destined dulcinea.
