6th New York Asian Film Festival
June 22-July 8, 2007 at the IFC Center and Japan Society
co-presented with Japan Society/JAPAN CUTS
America’s leading festival of popular Asian cinema is back for our sixth year and we’ve gotten big. Really big. This year we have 29 movies, 6 guests, 3 selections of short films, two venues, one Gamera and a program book that’s thick enough to stun an ox. But no matter how big we get it’s still all about you. The five members of Subway Cinema spend all year in a frantic quest to find movies that we think you’ll enjoy. We want to bring you movies that rocked the box office, won awards and made audiences around the world do their happy dance because we want you to have fun. It’s a film festival, after all. And every single movie is a big pinata full of cinematic candy that’s just waiting to explode.
This year we’re presenting a special 15th Anniversary screening of HARD BOILED because, well, someone has to. And we’ve partnered with Korea’s Mise en Scene Genres Film Festival to bring over the best horror, sci fi, comedy and action shorts from Korea, hand-picked by directors like Park Chan-Wook, E J-Yong and Ryu Seung-Wan. We’re also holding part of our festival at Japan Society and co-presenting several films with them as part of their first ever JAPAN CUTS – Festival of New Japanese Film. And we’re screening our first Pakistani film, HELL’S GROUND, with director Omar Khan also presenting “From Lahore With Gore” a special, cinematic tour of the highlights of Pakistani exploitation cinema.
We’re doing all of this because we want you to see what we see every year when we watch these movies: that the world is a much wider, a much wilder and a much, much stranger place than any of us will ever know. So come on down and try a slice. There’s more than enough for everyone.
And please don’t forget to vote in the Audience Award poll. There’s one Subway Cinema Audience Award out there for one very lucky movie and the decision on who it goes to is in your hands. Just fill out your ballot after the screening and let us know what you thought of the movie – because we care what you think.
