Once Upon a Time in Hong Kong: A Tsui Hark Retrospective

May 25-28, 2001 at Anthology Film Archives

2001 marked the 50th birthday of Hong Kong's foremost director, Tsui Hark, and Subway Cinema introduced his work to New York audiences with ONCE UPON A TIME IN HONG KONG: A TSUI HARK RETROSPECTIVE at the Anthology Film Archives, consisting of 8 of his most famous films.

Writing, directing and producing the films that have defined Hong Kong for over twenty years, Tsui Hark is the biggest name in Hong Kong filmdom. Able to skip from lowball comedy, to kinetic action flick, to dewy romance, to gooey horror, he has had a monster hit in every genre existent (and in some non-existent). Appealing to audiences from Hong Kong to Vietnam to Europe, Tsui Hark's world has brighter colors, faster plots, and stronger emotions than anything our humdrum reality has to offer.

Glorious pop operas, featuring strong female characters and warp-speed editing, Tsui Hark movies reawaken entertainment centers in your brain you didn't know you had. Stunned comatose by years of Hollywood banality, they'll wake up hungry, and the only regret we have is that once this festival is over, you'll have to go back to the watery gruel at your local multiplex.
