Follow That Actor
Hong Kong is a small place, and the same actors pop up again and again. Horror films breed their own special brand of flip-making, fall-taking, trash-talking fools and here's a guide to the actors you can follow from film to film in this retrospective.
Julie Lee - Hong Kong's sexploitation bad girl, she's also the former colony's only female hardcore auteur, sniffed at in the press for "stuffing a banana up her butt", with a husband (number two of three) who died in a hotel during an S&M session. She appears having naked, flying sex in A CHINESE TORTURE CHAMBER STORY and again having naked flying sex in THE ETERNAL EVIL OF ASIA. She also appears naked, but not flying or having sex, as a cashier in THE UNTOLD STORY.
Elvis Tsui - Hong Kong's number one leading man for exploitation movies, the bald-headed one is turned into a literal dickhead in THE ETERNAL EVIL OF ASIA, but gets a more heroic part as the naked, caped sex-hero of A CHINESE TORTURE CHAMBER STORY.
Ben Ng - you can see him play a sensitive director of a hospice for developmentally disabled adults in RED TO KILL, or a muscle-bound, evil Thai wizard with an axe to grind in THE ETERNAL EVIL OF ASIA.
Danny Lee - he plays a stiff-lipped cop in DR. LAMB (which he co-directed) and appears again as (surprise!) a stiff-lipped cop in THE UNTOLD STORY.
Lam Ching-ying - gets his first big role as the constable in Sammo Hung's ENCOUNTER OF THE SPOOKY KIND, and then plays the role he'd play for the rest of his life in MR. VAMPIRE.
Sammo Hung - he directed, produced, and starred in ENCOUNTER OF THE SPOOKY KIND, and produced MR. VAMPIRE.
Billy Tang - co-directed DR. LAMB and then appeared a few years later to finish off his impromptu urban trilogy of terror with RED TO KILL.
