THE LEG FIGHTERS (1980)
(aka Invincible Kung Fu Legs)
Directed by: Lee Tso-nam
Starring: Tan Tao-liang, Ha Kwong-li
Who says girls can't fight? In this movie, that's all they do. A veritable catalogue of kicks, it stars two of the greatest super-kickers in Hong Kong cinema, Dorian Tan Tao-liang and Ha Kwong-li. A Chinese Opera student discovered by director Lee Tso-nam, Ha Kwong-li was known for her great kicks and her height. Dorian Tan Tao-liang (aka “Flashlegs Tan”) was a Korean Chinese who taught martial arts to Yuen Biao, John Liu, and Bruce Lee’s daughter, Shannon Lee. Here the two of them basically do a low budget dry run for Sammo Hung’s The Prodigal Son.
As cheap as a carnival sideshow, this flick focuses on Phoenix (Ha Kwong-li) who uses her nimble feet to take on all comers with the help of her irritating servant. When her new teacher, "Flashlegs" Tan Tao-liang, shows up there's a period of adjustment while they kick each other in the head before they unite and use their insoles to beat down everyone who's working their nerves.
The kung fu comedy flows fast and irritating in this flick and will hurt your brain less if you make sure to have a couple of beers to numb your pain. But when the Canto-corn comedy is over you’re left with some painful looking training sequences and some really incredible action setpieces that just keep getting faster and more intense until the climax when they knock your block off.
