Over the Rainbow (Korea 2002)
Directed by: Ahn Jin-Woo
Starring: Lee Jung-Jae, Chang Jin-Young, Kong Hyung-Jin
Local weatherman, Lee Jung-Jae, has a car accident and wakes up with some minor holes in his memory, like who he was in love with before he got flattened by a truck. Pals from his college photography club try to help him piece it all back together, and lost luggage attendant, Chang Jin-Young, pitches in to get her mind off her own recent romantic misadventures. Being the stars, and having genuine onscreen chemistry, they start to fall for each other. But is it true love, or a car crash rebound?
Slick, stylish, and unashamed of being a crowd-pleasing romantic comedy, OVER THE RAINBOW throws caution to the wind and spews shameless love confetti like the big, candy-colored piñata it is. Its sugar cut with enough bitter humor to keep things from going all saccharine, it¹s the performances that make this movie a stand-out. The photography club is a rogue¹s gallery of college kids all grown up, and going nowhere but to the next bar. Lee Jung-Jae¹s eager-to-please dorkiness, and Chang Jin-Young¹s “I just woke up” charm, are in full effect, and you¹d have to have had a lousy childhood for this movie not to insinuate itself into your pleasure centers and start pumping out serotonin. Sliding skillfully backwards and forwards in time, and as fun as being tackled by a gang of cute animals, this is the most effortless romantic comedy of the year.
