TROUBLESHOOTER (Korea, 2010)
Directed by: Kwon Hyeok-Jae
Starring: Sol Kyung-Gu, Lee Jung-Jin, Oh Dal-Su, Choi Ji-Hon
A private investigator is called to investigate a lover’s tryst at a hotel, and suddenly finds himself caught in a fiendish trap - there’s a body in the room, and all the evidence points to him instead of the serial killer he put away back in his days on the police force. The phone rings, and a voice warns him to follow instructions if he wants to clear his name. Instead, he runs. As he goes on the lam, the cops and the crooks think they’ve got him beat, but they forgot one important thing: He’s played by Public Enemy star, Sol Kyung-Gu, and that means he is going to kick everybody’s ass. Yes, you too. Start running. He’s really mad.
Like the Bourne movies with a sense of humor, TROUBLESHOOTER is the story of what happens when people screw with the wrong guy. Gadget-happy Tae-Sik may not be as much of a fiend as his character in Public Enemy, but he oozes cool professionalism and sheer badassery, wielding even his camera lens like a one-armed swordsman. Unfortunately, his adversaries are always one step ahead as they draw him deeper into a political conspiracy which threatens his daughter’s life and makes an enemy of virtually every ex-colleague he ever thought he could trust.
Kwon Hyeok-Jae, longtime protege of Ryoo Seung-Wan (director of The Unjust and co-writer of this film), is making his directorial debut with TROUBLESHOOTER, and he couldn’t have picked a wilder way to launch his career - this movie is a breathless rollercoaster going a million beats per minute. Utilizing cutting-edge technology to drive his story forward, he turns TROUBLESHOOTER into a Hitchockian homage with an iPad. In the online age, Kang Tae-Sik, has the advantage on his adversaries - he knows their final battle in the streets will be streaming live. Don’t forget to left-click and save.
